Augie's Barbed Wire Smokehouse

About us

Augie's Barbed Wire Smokehouse started in 2000 with nothing but a dream, a few dollars, and a love for old-school BBQ. After leaving the corporate world, Augie Cortez opened his first restaurant in the King William District — a cozy spot where friends and family packed the place every night. That's where he met Sandra, who would become both his partner in life and in smoke.

In 2004, Augie and Sandra found the perfect home for their new venture at 3709 N. St. Mary's, near Brackenridge Park, the San Antonio Zoo, and Alamo Stadium. The property had a story of its own — the original zookeeper once lived in the small house out back, where he famously raised flamingo chicks and shared tea with the zoo's chimpanzees.

Keeping its 1940s rustic charm, the Cortez family transformed the space into Augie's Barbed Wire Smokehouse, a family-owned, community-driven BBQ joint known for smoked brisket, ribs, jalapeño sausage, and homemade sides — all slow-cooked on an iron pit.

Over the years, Augie, Sandra, and their four sons have made Augie's more than just a restaurant — it's a local gathering place. The family actively supports local nonprofits and 501(c)(3)s, including the Consejo Organization and Catholic Charities, where Augie proudly served as El Rey Feo 73, giving back to families across San Antonio. At Augie's, guests are greeted like old friends — with a smile, a hug, and the best BBQ in town. Whether you're visiting after the Zoo, Kiddie Park, or the golf course, or just craving that home-style BBQ flavor, you'll find it right here under the oaks on St. Mary's Street.
